why heretics get treated worse than heathens (the rule that never died)

why heretics get treated worse than heathens (the rule that never died)

ok so heres a history take that sounds backwards until u think about it: the medieval church happily coexisted with actual enemies but burned its own people alive. and the same rule applied on the other side of the map. heretics heathens. always.

Massacre of the inhabitants of Béziers

the albigensian crusade. in the 1200s the pope declared a crusade against the cathars – christians who thought the material world was evil, living in southern france – and slaughtered entire towns. meanwhile the church's policy toward real non-christians in spain was "leave them alone, they pay taxes, they keep their faith." war is war, sure. but the inquisition – torture, fire, the internal police – was reserved for people who were 95% the same as them.

Goya, The Inquisition Tribunal

same story on the islamic side. classical law protects "people of the book": christians and jews keep their faith, pay a tax, live protected (the "dhimmi" system). BUT apostasy – a muslim leaving islam – is death in many schools of law. in the 800s the abbasids ran the "mihna," an inquisition testing scholars on their beliefs about the quran, imprisoning the wrong-thinkers. later the ottomans massacred alevi shia muslims by the tens of thousands (1514) while their policy toward christian subjects was literally "pay tax, be fine." a muslim empire killing shia muslims was worse than fighting christians.

and the best worst example: jews. never heretics – never claimed to be christian. but they are the closest outsiders: same god, same bible, literally your neighbor. and europe treated them worse than anyone. the more inside u look from outside, the more they hate u.

and obviously, the jews ran the same rule internally. judaism has a word for its own heretics – "minim," basically "the other jews." the rabbis wrote a curse into the synagogue prayers (birkat haminim, 90 AD) aimed at jews who believed jesus was the messiah – cursed every sabbath until they left. then the karaites appeared in the 8th century – jews rejecting the talmud, "bible only" – radioactive for a thousand years: no intermarriage, no community. in the 1600s sabbatai zevi convinced half the world's jews he was the messiah, then converted to islam, and the rabbis hit the movement with a "herem" (excommunication), exiling his followers into permanent pariah status. hasidism got the same from the orthodox establishment in the 1700s. today the orthodox dont even recognize reform conversions. same engine, gentler temperature: no bonfires, just "we wont marry you" – which might honestly be a slower death than fire.

so why? three reasons, and none of them about danger – all about identity.

1. a heathen CONFIRMS who we are – he stands outside the fence, the "them" that makes "us" possible. a heretic is INSIDE the fence telling us the fence is wrong. thats not an attack on the border, thats a threat to the concept of borders.

2. the convert problem. the guy who left knows where the bodies are buried. both sides suspect him. spain made a "blood purity" law (limpieza de sangre) to check who was a "new christian" – u could be a faithful catholic for three generations and still a traitor because grandpa was a jew.

3. pollution theory. anthropologist mary douglas wrote a whole book on it: inside contamination is scarier than outside attack. the heretic messes with the sacred stuff. u dont fight pollution, u burn it. fire was literally the purification ritual.

and the kicker: this never died – we just changed the words. "heresy" became "internal enemy." look at american politics: the republican establishment and the maga base hate EACH OTHER more than either hates democrats. liz cheney – establishment republican who voted to impeach trump – got destroyed by her own party: removed from leadership, primaried, basically excommunicated. a republican attacking a democrat is politics. a republican attacking liz cheney is a crusade. dem voters, meanwhile, hate joe manchin and kyrsten sinema – the two dems who killed their own party's bill – far more than they hate the average gop senator. the guy on ur own team who breaks ranks gets nuclear treatment. the enemy outside at least gets a fair fight. the worst person is never the guy who hates u – its the guy who looks like u and says the wrong thing.

so next time ur arguing with some guy online who agrees with u on everything but ur still mad at him: congratulations. ur a medieval inquisitor. have a nice day. and watch ur own words. the fire is always for the ones closest to u.
