Fusion power in plain English

We keep hearing about fusion - the 'artificial sun'. Where are we actually? Closer than you think. China's EAST reactor held plasma at 100 million degrees for 1066 seconds - a world record. In January they also broke the 'density limit', a headache scientists had for decades. In June, the world's biggest fusion magnet (21 meters long, 582 tons) was finished in Hefei using 100% domestic parts - that was the scariest piece of the whole to-do list, and it's done. A smaller machine called BEST should demo real power generation by the end of 2027. Meanwhile in the US, Helion wants to build the first fusion power plant in Washington state, and CFS is pushing high-temp superconductors hard. China's roadmap: a full test reactor (CFETR) by 2035, a commercial demo plant around 2050. The industry moved the goalposts forward too - people now say demo in the 2030s, power on the grid by 2040. What's still hard? Making it cheap enough to beat regular power plants, breeding tritium fuel, and materials that survive neutron bombardment. Bottom line: fusion is no longer 'always 30 years away' - it's a real engineering race now, and it might just win.
